After-School Jiu-Jitsu in Takoma Park: What Parents Should Know

School lets out mid-afternoon; work doesn’t. Here is how our 5:00 PM kids’ classes fill the after-school hours — the times, the age groups, the safety structure, and what your child actually does on the mat.

For most Takoma Park families, the hardest hours of the day are the ones between the school bell and dinner. Your child is done by mid-afternoon; your workday is not. What fills that gap matters — and it is the reason our kids’ classes start when they do. At WDC BJJ, children ages 4–12 train at 5:00 PM, Monday through Thursday, in a real, structured jiu-jitsu class at our academy at 720 Erie Ave: 45 minutes of movement, technique, and supervised practice, finished by 5:45 and home in time for dinner and homework. This guide walks through how it works — the times, the age groups, what a class actually looks like, and how we keep new and shy kids safe — so you can judge whether it fits your family’s afternoons.

The after-school slot: 5:00 PM, Monday to Thursday

The weekday kids’ class runs 5:00–5:45 PM, Monday through Thursday, for ages 4–12 grouped by age and size. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday are gi classes; Tuesday is no-gi. Older kids — ages 10–12 — can also stay for a second session at 6:00 PM on those evenings, and on Saturday the 9:00 AM class is set aside for younger and smaller kids. Forty-five minutes is deliberate: long enough for a real class — warm-up, technique, and practice — and short enough that a child who has already had a full school day still has something left for it. You can see the whole week on our class schedule.

Grouped by age and size, from Little Grapplers up

Nobody’s seven-year-old trains with the twelve-year-olds. Our youngest group, Little Grapplers, is ages 4–6: at that age, learning happens through movement, games, and play that quietly builds focus, coordination, and confidence, with the foundation skills of jiu-jitsu disguised as the fun part of the day. Kids ages 7–12 learn real technique at their level — escapes, control, and teamwork — in a structured class with friends their age. Across the whole program, children are grouped by age and size, so partners are always a fair match. Teenagers, ages 13–17, are not folded in with the kids at all; they have their own class at 6:00 PM.

What an after-school class actually looks like

Every class follows the same reassuring rhythm, which is part of the point after a long school day. Class opens with movement and games that build balance, coordination, and listening skills. Then the coach teaches one technique in small, clear steps, in simple language — no child is expected to keep up with a pace set for older kids. Kids then practice what they learned with a partner their own age and size, with a coach watching every group, and class finishes with mat time that teaches respect, patience, and cooperation. It is controlled practice in a structured room — not fighting, and not chaos with a whistle. The full picture of the program is on our kids jiu-jitsu page.

What it builds beyond the mat

Parents usually come to us for one of five things, and a good kids’ class quietly works on all of them. Focus: games and drills that teach a child to watch, listen, and follow a coach’s steps — the same skills a classroom asks for. Coordination: rolling, crawling, standing, and falling safely build body awareness from the first class. Confidence: small steps, taught clearly and earned one at a time, in front of the same friendly group every week. Discipline: lining up, bowing in, taking turns, and treating partners kindly — the structure of a martial arts class, sized for kids. And teamwork: jiu-jitsu is practiced with partners, so every class is also practice in cooperating, communicating, and looking out for the person across from you.

Safety — and a first day built for shy kids

Safety here is mostly structure. Partners are matched by age and size, a coach watches every group during practice, and children learn the tap — the signal that stops any exchange instantly — from the beginning. New students are never thrown into the deep end, and the first day has its own system: the buddy system pairs your child with a friendly, experienced student their own size who knows it is their first day. The coach learns your child’s name in the first few minutes and checks in with you partway through class, and no child is ever asked to perform in front of the room unless they want to be. Parents watch from the side of the mats — you will see everything we do, every class, which is exactly how it should be.

An honest note about pickup and programs

One thing we say plainly, because families ask: WDC BJJ is a martial arts academy, not a childcare provider. There is no school pickup or transportation — families bring their children to us at 720 Erie Ave, where we have our own parking lot, and the 5:00 PM start is built around that trip: school, a snack, and then class. What we offer in the after-school hours is the class itself, taught by the same coaches and held to the same standards as everything else we run. We are separately asking Takoma Park families whether a fuller after-school program — class plus supervised homework time — would help them, and collecting the answers on our after-school page; if that is the shape your family needs, adding your name there is how it gets built.

If your child is not training yet, the way in is the same one every student here started with: a free first class in their own age group, at 5:00 PM on a weekday or 9:00 AM on Saturday. It is a real group class — your child trains, you watch from the side of the mat, and afterwards we walk you through how the program works and answer every question. Book a free class, or read exactly what a first visit looks like in our first-class guide — then decide with zero pressure.

After-school questions

Kids' classes run Monday through Thursday at 5:00–5:45 PM for ages 4–12, grouped by age and size — gi on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and no-gi on Tuesday. Older kids, ages 10–12, can also join a second session at 6:00 PM on those same evenings. On Saturday, the 9:00 AM class is for younger and smaller kids. The full week's times are on our class schedule page.

It fits the after-school hours well: class is 45 minutes of real movement after a day of sitting, on a predictable weekday rhythm, and it is done by 5:45 PM — home in time for dinner and homework. Inside that structure, kids build focus, coordination, confidence, discipline, and teamwork: movement and games first, one technique taught in small steps, then supervised practice with partners their own age and size.

Our kids program serves ages 4–12. The youngest group, Little Grapplers, is ages 4–6, where learning happens through movement, games, and play. Kids ages 7–12 train real technique at their level in the same 5:00 PM classes, and everyone is grouped by age and size — no child trains against a much bigger partner. Teenagers, ages 13–17, have their own separate class at 6:00 PM.
