Gi vs No-Gi for Kids: A Parent’s Guide
One has a uniform you can grab. The other doesn’t. What the two formats of jiu-jitsu mean for your child — and why learning both matters.
New jiu-jitsu parents hear two terms in week one — “gi” and “no-gi” — usually while looking at a schedule and wondering if they’ve enrolled their child in two different sports. You haven’t. They’re two formats of the same art, and at WDC BJJ in Takoma Park, kids train in both. Here’s the difference, and why it matters.
Gi: the traditional uniform
In gi classes, kids wear the traditional uniform — jacket, pants, and belt. The fabric is part of the game: partners can grip collars and sleeves, which slows everything down and makes it deeply technical, a kind of physical chess. Enrollment at WDC BJJ includes a free uniform, so the gi itself is never an extra purchase to start.
No-gi: athletic clothes, faster game
In no-gi classes, kids train in athletic clothes — a rash guard and shorts or leggings. With no fabric to grab, grips go to wrists, arms, and body position, and the action moves quicker, with more wrestling in its DNA. For trials, no-gi days are the zero-preparation option: athletic clothes and a water bottle, and we keep loaner gis at the gym for gi days too.
Why kids learn both
Each format teaches what the other can’t. Gi training builds precision — grips, posture, patience. No-gi builds movement — scrambling, balance, reacting when there’s nothing to hold. Together they make a complete young grappler, and moving between them keeps classes fresh for kids who train several times a week. Our weekday kids classes alternate formats across the week, so a child training twice a week gets both naturally.
Seeing it beats reading about it
The fastest way to understand the difference is to watch your child in a real class. Kids’ free trials run at weekday 5:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM — book on the free trial page, and our Kids FAQ covers ages, safety, belts, and everything else parents ask.
