Kids’ Jiu-Jitsu Near Silver Spring & the DC Line

Our academy is in Takoma Park — less than two miles from Downtown Silver Spring and a few minutes from Takoma, DC. If your family lives along that line, here is what training with us actually looks like.

If you live in Silver Spring or on the DC side of the line, you have probably noticed the geography works in your favor: Takoma Park sits exactly where Montgomery County meets the District, and our academy is right in the middle of it. WDC BJJ is at 720 Erie Ave in Takoma Park — less than 2 miles from Downtown Silver Spring, and just 1.4 miles from Georgia Ave and Ellsworth Dr. For families in Takoma DC, Brightwood, and the neighborhoods along the line, we are a few minutes in the other direction. Many of our kids’ families make this short trip four days a week. Here is what they come for, and how it fits a school-week afternoon.

One academy for the whole line

Families along the Silver Spring–DC corridor often end up choosing between a recreation program on one side and a real academy on the other. We built this academy to be the one worth the short drive: a family-owned GFTeam school, teaching since 2015, where kids train in a dedicated martial arts room with the same coaches every week. Our own parking lot sits at the door, so the trip is simple — in the car, park, walk in. The details for Silver Spring families, including directions, are on our kids BJJ in Silver Spring page and the wider Silver Spring martial arts page.

The class: 5:00 PM, Monday to Thursday

Kids ages 4–12 train at 5:00–5:45 PM, Monday through Thursday — gi on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, no-gi on Tuesday. Forty-five minutes is deliberate: school, a snack, class, and home for dinner, all before the evening runs out. Children are grouped by age and size. Our youngest, Little Grapplers (ages 4–6), learn through movement, games, and play; kids 7–12 learn real technique at their level in the same class time. Older kids, ages 10–12, can also stay for a second session at 6:00 PM, teenagers (13–17) have their own 6:00 PM class, and Saturday’s 9:00 AM class is set aside for younger and smaller kids. The full week is on our class schedule.

What your child actually does in class

Every class follows the same rhythm. It opens with movement and games that build balance, coordination, and listening. Then the coach teaches one technique in small, clear steps, and kids practice it with a partner their own age and size while a coach watches every group. Children learn the tap from the very first class — the signal that stops any exchange instantly. New students get the buddy system: a friendly, experienced kid their own size shows them where to stand and what comes next, and parents watch everything from the side of the mats. The complete program — safety, belts, and how progress works — is on our kids jiu-jitsu page.

Why families make the trip

The families who drive in from Silver Spring and across the DC line tell us a consistent story: they wanted a real program, not a rotating activity — the same coaches learning their child’s name, a structured class that builds focus, confidence, and discipline in small visible steps, and a room where their child has friends from both sides of the line. Because we sit between the two, our kids’ classes naturally mix Takoma Park, Silver Spring, and DC families — for a lot of parents, that community is the reason they stay long after the first month.

Both sides of the line, one kids’ program

Because the academy sits where it sits, the mat fills with families from both directions: Silver Spring and Langley Park on one side, Takoma DC and Brightwood on the other, and Takoma Park itself in the middle. For kids, that mix is a quiet benefit — classmates from different schools and neighborhoods, one set of coaches, one standard of behavior on the mat. For parents, it means the program runs on a real academy’s calendar rather than a short seasonal session: classes every week, all year, with belts and stripes marking progress your child can see. If you are comparing options along the corridor, our guide to choosing a jiu-jitsu school lists the nine questions worth asking any of them — including us.
