Teens BJJ FAQ

Everything parents ask us

Ages 13–17. Teens get their own dedicated program — not the kids’ classes and not the adult room — because a fourteen-year-old is neither.

Teens train at 6:00 PM Monday through Thursday. The full weekly grid for every program is on our class schedule page.

Neither — teens have their own session, with students their own age, coached at a level that respects where they are: more mature than the kids’ room, not yet in the adult room.

Yes. Beginners are welcome and expected. Fundamentals come first, everything is taught in small steps, and new students are paired thoughtfully. No one is expected to perform on day one.

Teens training is supervised and structured, with the same rule that runs the whole academy: tapping out stops everything, instantly, every time. It is a contact sport — bumps and hard workouts are part of it — but sessions are coached, partners are matched by size and experience, and live practice is always scaled. Tell us about any injury or condition before the first class.

Comfortable athletic clothes (no pockets or zippers) and a water bottle. We keep a few loaner gis at the gym. When your teen enrolls, a uniform is included free.

A parent or guardian books the trial, and your teen joins a real teens class — no payment, no contract. Arrive about 15 minutes early and check in at the door together. Book on the free trial page or call (202) 636-3453.

Training builds strength, conditioning, coordination, and composure under pressure — qualities that carry into other sports and into daily life. We won’t promise specific results for any individual teen; what we can say is that showing up twice a week to hard, focused work tends to show up everywhere else too.

Teens earn stripes and belts on the youth belt path, based on attendance, attitude, and skill — the coach’s decision. Around age 16, students transition toward the adult belt ranks, with placement decided by their coach based on their training. The Belt Journey page lays out the whole map.

Two to three times a week is a great rhythm. The teens session runs four evenings a week, so it can flex around school and other sports.

Yes — competitions are available for teens who want them, and always optional. Students who compete train inside the same program, with extra preparation as events approach.

Programs vary by how often you train, and we don’t publish membership prices online. Come try a free class first, and we’ll walk you through the options that fit — honestly and in person — with no contracts or long-term commitment.

We have our own parking lot at the gym — free parking at 720 Erie Ave, Takoma Park. Park in the three spaces on the left or the spaces on the side, and please keep the center of the driveway clear. Check in at the door when you arrive and we’ll point you to the right room.
